Do I need planning permission for shop front signage?

Do I need an illuminated shop sign?
If you’re open into the evening, or your frontage sits in shade, lighting usually pays back. Illuminated signs are also more visible in overcast conditions (which is most of the year in the UK). If you’re not sure, tell us your street and opening hours and we’ll advise on what’s worth the extra cost.
What are common signage mistakes to avoid?
The most common issues we see: too much text (signs need to work in 2 seconds at 20 metres), low contrast colour combinations (looks great on screen, unreadable at distance), undersized lettering, choosing the cheapest option for exterior-facing material (UV degradation and weather damage hit cheap materials hard), and fitting without checking planning requirements first.
